Extended Machine Storage Instructions
The information contained herein does not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment and location, nor to provide for every possible contingency to be met during the extended storage of a Lucas product. It is the sole responsibility of the customer to use discretion to determine proper storage procedures.
CAUTION: Clean ONLY by wiping or brushing. Do NOT use compressed air as this tends to force the dirt into the working parts of the machine. Way areas, way covers, feedback devices and the spindle nose and spindle sleeve are particularly vulnerable to damage through the use of air hoses for cleaning.
Scope:
This specification covers the minimum recommended guidelines for machinery, equipment and accessories that will be placed into storage for an extended period of time.
- Cleaning:
A: Supplies:
i. Fingerprint neutralizer
ii. Mineral spirits or any high quality degreasing cleaner that dries without leaving a film.
B: All external machined surfaces are to be cleaned with 2-A-2 to remove dirt and oils.
C: Treat all external machined surfaces with 2-A-1. Special care should be given to the Ways, Ballscrews (or leadscrews) and the Spindle and the Spindle Sleeve.
D: Way covers are to be cleaned on the 'top' side and the 'bottom' side with 2-A-2, then 2-A-1.
E: All finished metal parts such as Gibs, Caps, Way cover extensions, etc., are to be cleaned with 2-A-2, then 2-A-1.
F: Electrical panels and control enclosures are to be cleaned with dry rags and vacuumed, inside and outside. Place an industrial corrosion inhibitor (Hoffman A-HCI) inside all control enclosures and boxes (consult Hoffman literature for suggested amounts). If possible, electrical panels should be energized for four (4) hours every four (4) to six (6) months.
- Preservation:
A: Supplies
i. Texaco Rust Proof Oil.
B: (Alternate - Mobil Vaprotec Light - see text)
C: LPS #3 'extra-duty' rust inhibitor lubricant
.
D: Houghton Rust Veto 342 protective coating.
E: Oil-resistant paper and cloth.
F: Mobil EP-1 Grease.
- All coolant and hydraulic systems are to be drained and filled with 3-A-1 and operated for approximately two (2) minutes, then drain the entire system. ALTERNATE; Fill all coolant and hydraulic reservoirs with 3-A-1-A, operate for two (2) minutes and leave in system.
- All ways, Table tops, the front face of the Head, Ballscrews and leadscrews are to be sprayed with 3-A-2. All surfaces are then to be coated with two (2) coats of 3-A-3. NOTE: Allow drying time between coats.
- All hydraulic and pneumatic lines should be 'dusted' with a commercial powder as recommended by hose manufacturers to delay aging of the rubber surface.
- Remove the machine Table and Saddle; the Bed and Saddle ways are to be sprayed with 3-A-2. All surfaces are then to be coated with two (2) coats of 3-A-3. NOTE: Allow drying time between coats. Clean the bottom way surfaces of the Table and Saddle with dry rags. Cut strips of 1/16" thick nylon or plastic to fit the way surfaces Put the Saddle back onto the coated Bed with the plastic between all surfaces. Do the same with the Table. Cover all Table tops and all exposed way surfaces with oil resistant cloth. Wrap all Ballscrews and leadscrews with oil resistant cloth.
- Remove the Spindle from the Head and clean. The Spindle is to be sprayed with 3-A-2 and then to be coated with two (2) coats of 3-A-3. NOTE: Allow drying time between coats. Wrap in oil resistant cloth. Store the Spindle on the Table top in a cradle fabricated from nylon or plastic.
- DO NOT USE WOOD!
- Cover the face of the Head with oil resistant cloth.
- All finished metal parts such as Gibs, Caps, Way Covers, Way Extensions, Leveling Screws, Outboard Roller Studs. etc. are to be coated with two (2) coats of 3-A-3. NOTE: Allow drying time between coats.
- Clean and coat all exposed seals (ie, pump shaft, Spindle Sleeve. Pillow Blocks, etc.) with 3-A-5.
- All other miscellaneous items such as the counterweight chain, leveling screw components, etc. are to be coated with 3-A-3.
- All openings of electric motors and other electrical equipment shall be sealed with waterproof tape.
- The Spindle Motor should be rotated - by hand - (or some other means) at least once every three (3) months so that it does not rest in the same angular position continually.
